Department Summary

The Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education offers a variety of accredited programs including Bachelor of Science in Education in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education, and Master of Education leading to initial licensure and professional licensure in Reading (Reading Specialist and Language, Literacy, and Culture concentrations) and Elementary and Early Childhood Education (include STEM and Applied Technology concentrations). The Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education is committed to preparing thoughtful professional educators who are prepared to teach diverse learners in the 21st century. Essential Duties

The Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education at Bridgewater State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, assistant professor in Literacy Education. Responsibilities include

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate reading/literacy courses to a diverse population of students

  • Advise undergraduate and graduate students

  • Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate practicum students

  • Participate in the development of departmental curricula, contribute to the development of the undergraduate literacy studies minor and graduate reading program.

  • Participate in department meetings, serve on faculty committees, support initiatives, and adhere to all institutional policies.

  • Demonstrate asset-based approach toward students from all backgrounds and all abilities.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure proper alignment of related courses.


Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Reading/Literacy or Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Literacy or a field that is related to Literacy awarded by September 1, 2025.

  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse student populations such as those from the wide range of age, race/ethnicity, sexual orientations and gender identities, linguistic abilities, national origins, and abilities

  • Experience as a full-time classroom teacher in grades preK-6 is required

  • Experience as a practicing consulting teacher of reading, reading specialist/ interventionist, or a literacy coach.

  • Experience teaching higher education courses in literacy, or K-12 literacy leadership role working with professional educators.

  • Commitment to excellence in teaching practice and advising that advances equity, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Demonstrated examples of scholarship and service.


Preferred Qualifications

  • If the applicant's doctorate is in Curriculum and Instruction, a master's degree in reading/literacy as well is preferred.

  • Experience using critical literacy frameworks.

  • Experience working in urban education.

  • Demonstrated experience using pedagogical strategies to support students from a range of minoritized communities.

  • Demonstrated experience supporting teacher candidates in learning the skills and competencies to support future students from our diverse communities

  • Possession of a teaching license for reading/literacy specialist, consultant teacher of reading, or similar.

  • Three or more years of experience as a full-time classroom teacher in grades preK-6

  • Possession of an elementary 1-6 and/or early childhood Pre-K-2 teaching license.

  • Teaching experience and/or research that includes a focus on digital literacy and technology in early childhood, elementary, and/or middle school classroom.

  • Experience teaching online courses and/or demonstrated competency in critical digital literacies, using web teaching technologies.

  • Demonstrated examples of success working in multilingual learner education.

  • Participation in scholarly activities, including research, conference presentations, and leading in-service workshops.

  • Participation in service activities within education-related programs/communities.
