Full Job Description


The Civil Division is soliciting applications for a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in the Contracts Section to advise on Information Technology (IT) contracts, Intellectual Property (IP), and general legal matters. The Contracts Section provides legal advice to County departments on a wide range of issues related to the procurement and administration of contracts for goods, services, and information technology products and the construction of and design of public works. Attorneys in this section review and edit contract documents, negotiate contract terms, and handle disputes related to the contract interpretation and enforcement, which may include Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and some litigation. The Contracts Section also provides general legal advice on a variety of topics to the King County Superior and District Courts, King County Elections, the Superior Court Clerk's Office, the King County Auditor's Office, the Office of Performance, Strategy and Budget (PSB), and the Treasurer's Office. The successful applicant will advise County client agencies on technology contracts, intellectual property issues, and other general legal matters.

The Civil Division provides comprehensive legal services to King County government, including all County elected and appointed officials, department heads, and with the managers of numerous county agencies and departments. Serving in its role as an in-house law firm for the County, the Civil Division works closely with its clients in solving a wide range of legal problems by providing legal advice and representing King County and its employees in lawsuits filed in state or federal courts. The Civil Division is composed of about 65 lawyers organized into seven specialized sections: (1) Contracts, (2) County Services, (3) Transportation & Real Property, (4) Employment, (5) Land Use, (6) Natural Resources, and (7) Litigation.

Job Duties

  • Advise County client agencies on technology contracts, intellectual property issues, and other general legal matters.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contract terms and conditions.
  • Draft, revise, and review procurement documents, e.g., Requests for Proposals (RFPs)
  • Advise clients on procurement related issues e.g. bidder questions, protests.
  • Advise clients on contract administration and enforcement issues.
  • Advise client on IP-related issues, including drafting cease and desist letters.
  • Assisting client with applying for trademarks with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Advise clients on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process.
  • Commence or defend the County in litigation related to contractual and/or IP disputes.
  • Advise clients on general legal issues.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

We are looking for applicants with at least 2 years of technology-related legal experience in either the public or private sector, who possess great client relations skills, great communication skills, strong analytical abilities, and strong negotiation and litigation skills. The successful applicant must have a strong commitment to race, equity, and social justice, including the development of personal cultural competency.

Special Requirements:

  • Member in good standing with the Washington State Bar.
  • Must submit to a criminal history check.
  • U.S. Citizenship (as required by RCW 36.27 and 29A.04 and Article VI of the WA Constitution).

Supplemental Information

This position will be a hybrid/in-person schedule as business needs allow, subject to a telecommuting agreement. Employees will be provided with a County-issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.

This position is open to all current regular deputy prosecuting attorneys on staff and will be a lateral transfer for an internal candidate. The position is also open to external candidates.

Salary: $112,073 - $155,091 commensurate with 2~15 years of experience.
