On-Call Gallery Teacher

Summary: To collaborate with Learning & Engagement staff and volunteers to deliver in-gallery tours for pre-k-12 students with a focus on inclusive, student-centered approaches for diverse audiences, and to assist in, implementing other student and teacher programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Attend trainings led by SLAM educators, curators, and external specialists on tour content, visitor engagement, and gallery teaching strategies to facilitate dynamic and meaningful experiences with student visitors
• In conjunction with Museum educators and volunteers, facilitate gallery teaching for pre-K-12 school groups with a primary focus on leading the Museum’s No Place for Hate tours, developed in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League. Assist with other SLAM programs including but not limited to Arts in the Basic Curriculum (ABC), and 5th Grade Explorers as needed.
• Support Multigenerational Learning staff in developing and implementing museum education programs for students and teachers who represent a wide-range of grades, school formats, and districts
• Research current trends in gallery teaching and develop age appropriate and DEAI-centered activities and prompts for in-gallery facilitation
• Perform tasks in support of program planning and implementation including but not limited to preparing sketchbooks and other materials, greeting school groups, and keeping an inventory of tour supplies
• Be a positive representative for the Museum
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications: Required: High school diploma with some post-secondary course work and 1-3 years’ experience teaching or facilitating programs with school age children, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. At least 18 years old by the first date of employment. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; comfortable interacting with audiences of diverse backgrounds and ability to maintain effective working relationships with other colleagues, Museum visitors, and outside partners and contractors. Flexible and responsive to audience, programmatic, or institutional needs. Interest in working with school aged youth who represent a wide-spectrum of diverse backgrounds and life experiences.

Preferred: Studio art experience. Post-secondary coursework in the areas of art history, art education, studio art, or related discipline. Comfort with virtual program formats and delivery such as Zoom or other platforms. Experience working with volunteers. Background knowledge of elementary or secondary education. Training or experience related to diversity, access, equity, and inclusion and facilitating anti-bias centered educational programming with youth, or a strong desire to learn and cultivate skills in this area.
Additional Details:

Pay Range: $18-$21 per hour; commensurate with experience
Work Hours: Part-time work during the school day (8:30 am – 3:30 pm) during the academic year and on occasional weekends and evenings throughout the year, dependent upon program schedule. As scheduled/needed; must be available during school tour times (Tuesday - Friday, 8:30 am - 3 pm) at least 2 days per week.

Selected candidates will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test before hire.
