Full Job Description

Job Summary

Under general direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, performs intelligence gathering applications using various forms of databases to assist investigators with pertinent information using both written and oral communications. Serves as an assistant to investigators in the Greenville Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division (CID) Violent Crimes Unit, providing clerical and investigative support for a variety of investigative operations. Attends or organizes intelligence conferences/meetings with local agencies. Acts as a subject matter expert (SME) in cellular technology. Transcribes interrogations/interviews, reviews/analyzes closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, reviews jail phone calls, and assesses National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) leads related to cases. Reviews ankle monitor data related to cases and assists the United States Marshals Service (USMS) task force and Violent Crimes Unit in apprehending fugitives. Performs database researching of people/places/vehicles/phones/guns, data analyzing and link analysis (social media search warrant returns & phone downloads). Performs data mapping & tracking (cell phone records/phone downloads), criminal activity intelligence gathering (social media accounts/ known gang member activity / violent crimes associates / other agency reports). Creates products for court and testifies in court. Responds to requests received by the Police Chief’s Office, Command Staff, and investigators assigned to CID. Participates in continuing education and training by seeking appropriate opportunities to learn or develop.

  • Provide Criminal Intelligence Support to CID: Attend meetings with CID Violent Crimes Unit investigators to provide criminal intelligence gathered and to identify other intelligence that may be used and needed. Attend or organize intelligence conferences/meetings with local agencies. Act as a SME in cellular technology. Analyze data from cell phones or other sources to identify suspect information for the use in prosecution or apprehension. Monitor social media outlets for criminal intelligence gathering/investigations. Monitor video surveillance systems (e.g., CCTV) and jail phone calls, communicating relevant information to investigators. Transcribe interrogations/interviews. Assess NIBIN leads related to cases. Review ankle monitor data related to cases and assist the USMS task force and Violent Crimes Unit in apprehending fugitives. Prepare and review preliminary reports, supplemental reports, sketches, diagrams, displays, and arrest records, as well as other documents pertaining to cases under investigation. Conduct queries to obtain criminal history, driver’s license, and other information regarding criminal suspects.

  • Conduct Specialized Analyses: Conduct specialized analyses using technical software packages. Interpret and analyze static data, such as pen register information. Prepare maps and intelligence reports as requested for investigative purposes. Conduct analysis of people involved in crimes, including repeat offenders, criminal organizations, and repeat victims that may include analyzing offender criminal histories, social media activity, and offender/victim relationships.

  • Prepare Investigative Reports and Court Materials: Prepare investigative reports and court material fully and accurately, documenting all activities conducted regarding criminal investigations. Consult with investigators and the Solicitor’s office to prepare cases for prosecution. Testify before trial court or Grand Jury regarding information gained through investigations.

  • Respond to Requests for Information: Respond to requests received by the Police Chief’s Office, Command Staff, and investigators assigned to CID such as court documents, maps, suspect identification, NIBIN information, pen register analysis, social media connections/activity, etc.

Perform other duties as assigned.



Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field related to data analysis, criminal justice, criminology, geography, or a related field.
  • Over two (2) years of experience in data analysis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) or more years of experience in the field of criminal justice data analysis.
  • International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysts (IALEIA) or IACA (International Association of Crime Analysts) certification.
  • Social media expertise, data manipulation skills, experience with Accurint TraX or similar software and producing link analyses.


Driver's License Requirements

  • Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License.

  • Statistical research and reporting methods, procedures, and techniques.

Ability to:

  • Think critically and perform complex data analysis and problem solving.
  • Maintain current professional standards through ongoing training and development.
  • Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing: prepare tactical, strategic, and operational reports; write clear and concise analytical reports and bulletins; and deliver related briefings and presentations.
  • Work independently, handle and prioritize multiple tasks, as well as, work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Effectively communicate complex information to internal and external groups.
  • Handle conflict with diplomacy and tact.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Establish and maintain effective internal and external communication and working relationships with department managers, City employees, the public and outside agencies (e.g., property managers, real estate agents, news media, Housing Authority, Probation and Parole, SLED, other law enforcement agencies in SC, etc.).
  • Participate in continuing education and training by seeking appropriate opportunities to learn or develop.
  • Use link analysis software, social media analysis, and communications analytics.
  • Operate general office equipment to include scanner, printer, copier, telephone, plotter, and computer with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Utilize specialized software and systems to include records management software, relational databases, FTP (File Transfer Protocol) software, and GIS (ESRI) software.


Working Conditions

Primary Work Location: Office environment.

Physical Demands:

Continuously requires sitting, vision, hearing, and talking. Frequently requires fine dexterity, walking, bending, and twisting. Occasionally requires standing, carrying, lifting, reaching, kneeling, handling/grasping, pushing/pulling, climbing, foot controls, balancing, and crouching and stooping. Sedentary strength demands include exerting up to 10 pounds occasionally or negligible weights frequently; sitting most of the time.

Mental Demands:

Frequently requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, performing multiple tasks simultaneously and working closely with others as part of a team. Occasionally requires irregular schedule, overtime, and tedious or exacting work.
