Juvenile Detention Deputy Superintendent

The State of Connecticut Judicial Branch is seeking a Juvenile Detention Deputy Superintendent to assist with scheduling, assigning, overseeing, and reviewing the work of staff engaged in providing safe and secure conditions for juveniles; direct staff engaged in providing intake, assessment, counseling, food services, medical treatment, recreation, and transportation; direct substance abuse prevention program activities including developing, planning, and scheduling educational programs for juveniles and staff, assignment and supervision of case managers, training and resource development, assessment and counseling, coordination of services with probation and other areas, and discharge planning; analyze and evaluate the accomplishment of program objectives; conduct performance evaluations for staff; maintain twenty-four hour on call responsibility for the center and assigned programs; assist with the development of policies and procedures; act as a liaison with other operating units, agencies, and outside officials regarding policies and procedures; conduct assessments of juveniles through the use of interviews and psychometric tests to determine treatment needs; prepare assessment reports for the court; provide release planning for juveniles including the use of alternative placements; manage operations in the supervisor's absence; assist with the procurement of equipment and supplies, the maintenance of records, and the collection of operating reports such as time and attendance, personnel transactions, fiscal expenditures, and statistical records; conduct safety and fire drills and is responsible for all security measures; supervise the transportation of juveniles to other detention centers, residential programs, and outside appointments; may assist in physically restraining juveniles as necessary; conduct on site visits to assigned programs to support start up and to ensure ongoing contract compliance; perform related duties as required. 

Salary Range: $100,682 - $131,461/year – plus State of Connecticut benefits.

New employees begin at the minimum. The starting salary for existing state employees may be higher than the minimum, in accordance with existing Judicial Branch policy.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

General Experience: Seven years of experience in a juvenile detention setting or related work.

Substitutions Allowed: 

1) College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
2) A Master's degree in a related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.

Working Conditions: Incumbents may be exposed to some risk of injury from abusive/assaultive detainees; may be exposed to communicable diseases. 

Special Requirements: 

1) A criminal record investigation will be conducted for all candidates.
2) Incumbents may be required to pass a physical examination.
